Well, I must apologize that it has been so long since I last blogged. As you can imagine, saving the world takes a shit-load of time. I have, however, done a lot of things since I last wrote that I intended to blog about... I saw another movie, took a little trip to Illinois, went to some auto races, took part in the summer lan '05, and decided to move. So I guess I have some catching up to do.
About that movie... (reader's digest version) I saw war of the worlds about two weeks ago. I was thoroughly unimpressed. As you saw, it doesn't even merit capitalization. The acting overall was sub-par. It wasn't terrible, but I have seen all the actors do better performances. The exceptions would be some 16 year old kid who played Tom Cruise's son so poorly I hope to never see him in any movie again, and Tim Robbins who pulled off an absolute nut-job VERY well. If there was an Oscar for best crazy person of the year, he would win it.
Illinois. My brother-in-law's family is from a town of 10-12 thousand people called Canton. Nearest city you can easily find on a map would be Peoria. Anyway, he and my sister were on leave for about a week so my mom and I drove down to visit them. It's hard to describe, but that town is the quintessential "American Town." It actually has a downtown district, old brick buildings from the turn of the century, and many other great qualities. Drive around town and 95 percent of the cars you see will be American. For many many years the town revolved around the giant Case-International Harvester tractor plant that was in town. Half the town worked there and the taxes from it made the town the type of place John Mellencamp was singing about in "Small Town". It was towns like Canton, found all over the Midwest, that drove the Golden Age of the U.S. after WWII. Just as America's glory days were numbered, however, so were Canton's. It soon followed the path of Bruce Springsteen's "My Hometown." The plant closed, and the town was hit hard. Fortunately, it has recovered fairly well by now. It's a great place.
The Auto races. Good time. My dad and I have been talking about doing this since I moved home in November. He's been looking forward...
DAMMIT!!! I just finished my entry (a LOT more) and I highlighted it all and went to ctrl C it all for transferring it to word/spell check and it I hit the wrong button. Well, rather, I hit the right button for IE, but now that I'm using MY computer instead of the parents, it was the wrong button for Avant. Now it's all gone. I managed to recover this much. Dammit!
Anyway, he's been looking forward to it and I enjoyed our little father-son "night out." I'm really glad that we finally managed to get around to doing this.
I'm quitting now. Losing my entire post pissed me off and I don't care anymore. I'm not even going to spell check this until later. Since I have the spelling and grammar skills of a third grader I'm sure it will be hideous.
